Nutcracker on Ice Centerpeice Cake

I was asked to create a centerpiece for the cast party/reception for the Nutcracker on Ice (which my daughters both performed in). The theme colors were hot pink, turquoise and purple. I decided on a Nutcracker popping out of a cake decorated with skates and candies.

It was quite humorous to watch the skaters taking turns taking their picture with the cake!

"Around the World in 80 Years with Carl" was the title of this event. Carl has been my business mentor over the past couple of months and it was a pleasure to be able to make his big day but a little bit more special. The cake featured only a few of the flags for the countries he has traveled two, a book he wrote and published, and a globe. Many of the (140) guests at the party came from foreign countries to celebrate Carl's 80 years of life!

Cake Road Trip: Lego Groom's Cake

I was honored and privileged this month to be able to create a groom's cake for one of my closest friends in my home state of Rhode Island! My aunt was so generous as to open up her kitchen for my cake project (thank you, Marilyn) and Southwest airlines were so kind as to not give me trouble carrying a cake on board. (I baked it in MO, carried it on the plane "naked") and decorated it in RI. Everything went down without a hitch, amazingly. Andrea's groom, Tom, loves and collects Legos so we did a Lego themed surprise groom's cake. So much fun!

This was a Thomas the Train themed cake for a set of twin boys turning 4. Ironically, my own son also turned four on the same day as the twins... he wasn't too happy that we were buying toy trains for someone else and that they were not going to be returned!

The feedback from Ryan and Tyler's mom says it was a hit!

Brownie Wedding Cake: Funky Design

Jillian and PJ came to me wanting a wedding cake made from brownies. They decided on this design with the house on the top of a hill and balloons going up behind the house. Reasoning: PJ (the groom) had proposed to Jillian on a hill and after the proposal, his friends released hundreds of balloons from behind the other side of the hill.

Some other details on the cake:
Some squirrels (because Jillian loves squirrels)
The proposal balloons
A "cake topper" made from a picture that Jillian's 6 year-old sister drew of the two of them.
A mailbox with a J+P

1st Gender Reveal Cake: It's a....

BOY!!!!!!!

The newest trend in parenting... gender reveal cakes! The couple goes for their ultrasound and has the technician check the gender of the baby, then without telling the couple, the technician puts the news into a sealed envelope. The couple brings their favorite baker (wink, wink) the sealed envelope and then the baker makes either a blue or pink cake, decorated on the outside and the couple will find out the gender of their baby when they cut the cake, hopefully surrounded by their loved ones!

My first gender reveal cake was done for my cousin, Jeff and his wife, Melissa. I couldn't have been more excited! I always tell people that it is such a privilege to make cakes because I get to be a part of the happiest moments of people's lives (birthdays, weddings, baby showers, etc.) The introduction of gender reveal cakes takes this honor to a whole new level.

Joint Graduation Cake

It was quite an endeavor to come up with an idea for this cake. This was a joint graduation party for my sister, graduating with a nursing degree from Rockhurst and my cousin, graduating from SLUH, heading to K-State and going into architecture. SO.... this is what you get!

Bottom tier: Heart monitor (Gabby's nursing degree), ladybugs (AKA: Gabby's sorority), assorted pills around the bottom (nursing.)
Middle tier: blue prints, pencil, and protractor (architecture-Zach) with a tape measure around the base
Top tier: school logos: SLUH, Rockhurst University, and K-State)
Topped off with a graduation cap....

The original wedding cake collapsed at 10 AM the morning of the wedding so this is what we whipped up the day of the wedding... what an adventure! Thank you to my sister, Mary, for becoming a cake decorator for the day and to the bride and groom, Tony and Ryenn, for being so calm and patient! I was SO excited about the opportunity to make a playable Angry Birds cake for my cousin's birthday this month. It was inspired by the popular youtube video of the playable angry birds cake in England but I changed it a bit to add more cake servings and "Americanized" it with Kit Kats vs European chocolate. As you may or may not know, my husband and I were guests on the Oprah Show back in October. The show has finally been set to air on TV this Wednesday, March 4th. The premise of the show is "Can you Afford It" with Suze Orman about my husband's obsession with the Washington Redskins. They flew out to our home and filmed here, followed me on a cake delivery, and then flew my husband and I out to the set in Chicago. There will be a brief collage of my cakes featured in the "background story" on us!
